Marking her first major institutional exhibition in the United Kingdom since 2002, Nan Goldin’s You Never Did Anything Wrong at the Hayward Gallery spans five decades of pioneering work while signaling a profound evolution in her artistic trajectory. Capping a legendary career long anchored in the raw, unsparing documentation of human intimacy, chosen families, queer subcultures, and the structural devastation of addiction, this multimedia retrospective captures a decisive expansion of her ethical vision.
Rather than signaling a departure, Goldin’s new moving-image artworks widen her signature gaze to include the natural world. The domestic interiors and city nights that once served as the primary stages for her intimacies give way to a vast elemental domain, encompassing flora, fauna, subterranean wildfires, and the cosmic darkness of a solar eclipse. Grounded in the ecological truth that nothing exists alone, Goldin turns her patient lens toward an imperiled planet. The exhibition reframes nature documentation as a poetic elegy by treating landscapes and non-human life with the same reciprocity and tenderness she once reserved for human portraits. Ultimately, Goldin forges human vulnerability with planetary survival in an unbroken continuum of care across her entire practice.
