In what ways does nature inspire or inform your work?
Water, and in particular, oceans have always fascinated me. As the climate warms, we are seeing vast and unpredictable changes in the ocean which as land dwellers are often invisible to us. As the climate changes I feel drawn to tell stories that celebrate the beauty and primal importance of our natural world, both terrestrial and marine, and how imperative it is to save it.
What does it mean to you to be part of a thriving ecosystem?
I’m fortunate to live near the beach and even more fortunate in that the beach is now a Marine Protected Zone. In the ten years since enactment, we’ve seen a huge increase in fish and marine species mainly from prohibiting fishing. MPZ’s act as reservoirs for marine populations and can help restore damaged ecosystems. Every time I get in the water to dive or snorkel I can see with my own eyes a thriving underwater landscape and it gives me hope that commonsense changes can help fix past environmental damage and protect ecosystems going forward.
