The sun is always shining in Nadine Ijewere’s world. Whether it’s a beach in Senegal or a fisherman’s cove in Jamaica, Ijewere’s vibrant, sun-drenched photographs of friends, families, and, at times, entire communities often blur the lines between fashion and documentary. Over the past decade, the photographer’s unwavering creative vision that celebrates the diversity of nature as much as it honors diverse human experiences has made her one of the leading voices in fashion and the arts—and with that, she is remodeling both industries as she goes.
Now, in her first solo UK exhibition at Huxley-Parlour, titled Anthesis, Ijewere looks back on four years of experimenting with color and composition to tell a more expansive story of beauty than what is often shown in the mainstream. From photographing the cover of Atmos Volume 04: Cascade to documenting alumni and faculty members at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, the exhibition traces the radical fusion of genres across the artist’s work.
