Inside Brad Ogbonna’s Journey of Self-Discovery in Senegal

Photographs and Words by Brad Ogbonna

The photographer’s ongoing series offers a tender glimpse into the beauty and warmth of life in Dakar.

My grandmother was Fulani, an ethnic group that can be found throughout West Africa, primarily in Senegal. We never had a chance to meet so I’ve always felt a deep curiosity about her background and a natural connection to the Fula people and the lands in which they inhabit. I started visiting Senegal five years ago and have visited each year since then. On my first visit I was immediately drawn to the kindness of the people and the warmth of Dakar, the capital city.

This ongoing series has been an exploration in learning more about that side of my background.
