Photographs and Words by Bodhi Shola
These images begin with a simple premise: that nourishment—or lack thereof—is ecological and political.
Wellness is shaped by the health of watersheds, forests, soils, and oceans, and by the systems that decide who eats well and who pays the price for that consumption. After all, what are the foundations of regenerative, or extractive, food relationships?
In industrialized countries, the appearance of constant plenty is often sustained by depletion elsewhere. Resources are pulled from across the globe, disproportionately from places treated as economically expendable, leaving degraded soils and strained communities in their wake.
This work argues for a different orientation; one in which rest is central to regeneration, human life is recentered as part of nature, and ordinary simplicity is treated as a form of integrity. Re-enchantment with a world defined by beauty and reciprocity emerges.
In my own process of making the work, I felt the importance of listening beyond the human point of view to the language of the elemental realms. How does our nourishment speak of, and with, wild forests, exuberant rivers, and profound oceans? Do we listen to the waters murmuring about invasive pesticides and chemical residues from large-scale farming and industrialised processes? Could our relationship with nourishment become an act of devotion?
